Checklist for exchange students

This checklist guides you through all the required steps for your exchange studies at Tampere University, from application to the end of your semester. It applies to students starting their exchange either in the autumn semester (August–December) or the spring semester (January–May). After submitting your application and preliminary study plan, follow the checklist in order and complete each task by the indicated deadline. The steps are divided into five stages based on when each action is required during your exchange process.

The checklist includes five stages:

  1. Before admission – application, housing, and eligibility checks
  2. After admission – permits, insurance, and initial arrangements
  3. Pre‑arrival preparations – university registration, course registrations etc.
  4. Arrival and Welcome Week – arrival, orientation, and first teaching period
  5. After the semester has started – registrations, feedback, and later‑semester tasks

Stage 1: Before admission

    Apply for exchange studies

    Apply by 30 April / 15 October after nomination by your home university

  2. 2

    Apply for student housing

    Apply in May / October before admission (except ISEP students)

  3. 3

    Non‑EU citizens arriving from another EU country

    Your EU residence permit must cover the entire exchange period

Stage 2: After admission

    Apply for a residence permit

  2. 2

    Submit a mobility notification

  3. 3

    Arrange health insurance

    Strongly recommended for all exchange students

  4. 4

    Submit a question for the pre‑arrival info (optional)

    Questions accepted in May–June / October–November

  5. 5

    Sign your student housing agreement

    Sign in June / November; student housing availability is limited

  6. 6

    Make preliminary travel plans

    Plan your arrival for the official August / January arrival window

Stage 3: Pre‑arrival preparations

  1. 1

    Attend the pre‑arrival information session

    Highly recommended; date announced separately

  2. 2

    Register with the university

    Complete registration after receiving the email invitation

  3. 3

    Activate your TUNI account

    Required to access all university systems

  4. 4

    Set up multi‑factor authentication (MFA)

    MFA is mandatory for using your TUNI account

  5. 5

    Join the exchange student mobile app

    Use the invitation link sent by email

  6. 6

    Pay the Student Union (TREY) membership fee

    Highly recommended for student benefits and services

  7. 7

    Reply to your student tutor

    Replying to your student tutor is mandatory

  8. 8

    Sisu course registration info session

    Session is recorded and available afterwards

  9. 9

    Register for courses in Sisu

  10. 10

    Complete the information security course

    Mandatory Moodle course; complete by the deadline

  11. 11

    Start online DVV registration

    Start before the on‑campus DVV registration

  12. 12

    Order your student card

    Order after TREY payment is approved in Sisu

Stage 4: Arrival and Welcome Week

  1. 1

    Arrive in Tampere

    Arrive during the official August / January arrival window

  2. 2

    Collect your starting kit

    Available from ESN FINT or INTO; limited quantities

  3. 3

    Attend Welcome Week

    Participation in our Welcome Week is mandatory

  4. 4

    Check Welcome Week materials in Moodle

    Some slides will be published in Moodle

  5. 5

    Collect your plastic student card

    Available approximately 2 weeks after ordering

  6. 6

    Respond to the Welcome Week survey

    Feedback survey includes a prize draw!

  7. 7

    Courses begin

    Teaching starts in late August / early January

Stage 5: After the semester has started

  1. 1

    Attend DVV registration on campus

    Mandatory DVV registration is organised in August-September / January

  2. 2

    Register for later teaching periods

    Check registration deadlines for teaching period II / IV

  3. 3

    Submit your Finnish personal identity code

    Required by October / March, see Finnish personal identity code

  4. 4

    Register right of residence (EU citizens)

    Required only if applicable 

  5. 5

    Attend Bye Bye Tampere event

    Farewell event in November / April

  6. 6

    Respond to the exchange feedback survey

    Survey link sent by email; prize draw included
