Courses for exchange students

The Finnish academic system gives students a lot of freedom and responsibility to plan their own exchange studies and schedules. You don’t need to have everything fixed far in advance. Final course registrations usually take place about one month before your exchange studies begin, either in early August or early December.

You can register for courses online only after you have completed the official registration with the university. Course registration is not first come, first served, so there is no need to rush. What is important is that you register by the course-specific deadlines. After the deadlines, the teacher will choose the students for the course. At Tampere University, many study fields offer courses in English that can be completed as independent study, meaning there may be no regular lectures. This gives you flexibility, but it can feel quite different from what you may be used to at your home university.
