International student tutoring for exchange students

As an exchange student, you will be assigned a student tutor (also called a buddy). Your tutor is a local student who volunteers to help you prepare for your arrival in Finland and support you during your first steps at Tampere University. Tutors are assigned in July for the autumn semester and December for the spring semester. Your tutor will contact you before your arrival and can help you with practical questions and settling into university life.

Please note: You must wait for your tutor to contact you. Tutor contact details are not shared in advance. Each tutor supports several exchange students, so they may not always be available immediately or exclusively for you

You are responsible for arranging your own travel from your home country to your student housing in Tampere. 

If you arrive outside office hours:

  • Your tutor may be able to collect your housing key or meet you on arrival, if available

However, please be aware that:

  • Tutors are not obliged to meet you or collect keys
  • Tutors do not assist with starter kits (ESN FINT / INTO Tampere)
  • Tutors do not provide academic or study-related advice

What can an international student tutor help with?

  • Collecting housing keys from TOAS/POAS outside office hours
  • Practical questions about arrival and daily life
  • Finding the right contact for study-related matters
  • Navigating campus and finding your student housing
  • Basic support with course registration in Sisu
  • Locating ESN FINT (City centre campus) or INTO Tampere (Hervanta campus)
  • Assistance at Nysse's customer service for a transport card

How is tutoring organised at Tampere University?

At Tampere University, international student tutoring for exchange students is organised by International Mobility Services in cooperation with the Student Union (TREY) and subject associations and guilds within the Student Union. TREY coordinates tutor recruitment, applications, marketing, and supports tutor training. It also works closely with international tutor organisers in the subject associations.

Campus-specific coordination

  • Hervanta campus: Exchange student tutoring is coordinated by INTO Tampere
  • City centre campus: Tutoring is organised by subject associations by field of study
  • Kauppi campus: Tutoring is organised by subject associations by field of study
