Tampere University Student’s Guide

Tampere University

Registration with the university for exchange students

Your identification and registration with Tampere University happens online, before arrival and before Welcome Week. It is mandatory for all exchange students, regardless of arrival date. The purpose is to verify your identity before sending your personal activation instructions. You must wait until you are invited by email.

Important: If you do not complete the identification and registration process, you will be unable to start your exchange studies. Instructions are sent by International Mobility Services in mid‑June (autumn) and mid‑November (spring). Look for the automated email titled Tervetuloa Tampereen korkeakouluyhteisöön / Welcome to the Tampere Universities sent from noreply [at] tuni.fi

From start to finish in three steps

  1. 1

Complete ID check via online identification

After you’re invited by email either in June or November

  2. 2

Activate TUNI account, set password, accept terms

Right after successful identification process, follow email instructions

  3. 3

Update Finnish contact details in Sisu

Update your contact details either in August or December

What you need (before you start)

  1. Basic requirements (everyone)
    • Stable internet and a smartphone
    • Official ID (preferably a biometric passport) - driving licence is not valid
  2. Choose your identification method (depends on your nationality)
  3. Final step - Microsoft Authenticator (everyone)
    • For the final steps, all students need multi-factor authentication (MFA), which uses the Microsoft Authenticator app

Exceptions (Finnish banking ID's or excisting TUNI account)

  • If you have Finnish online banking IDs (or other Finnish e‑identification), identify yourself by using Finnish identification tokens
  • If you already have a TUNI account from previous studies, you don’t need a new registration - just activate your account again

Photo quality tips (to avoid rejection) - Finnish Authenticator mobile app

Take only the passport data page (not the full opening), avoid reflections/shadows, don’t cover any part with fingers, and take a clear selfie against a white background while looking straight into the camera and following app instructions.

Account activation (what happens in practice)

Activation is done at password.tuni.fi (also accessible via id.tuni.fi). You authenticate, accept terms, set a password, and then you’ll see your new account and @tuni.fi email address on the Ready! page. Read full instructions on: Tampere University IT Services - Username and password. You will not receive a separate confirmation email. Your activation is complete when the activation page shows your TUNI username and @tuni.fi address and you can sign in to TUNI services (e.g., intra.tuni.fi) with your TUNI email.

Mandatory security steps after activation

You must set up multifactor authentication (MFA) with Microsoft Authenticator as instructed. All TUNI account holders must also complete the self‑paced Moodle course on information security within the required timeframe after activating their account (otherwise the account can be locked).
