Archiving data related to the thesis
In certain justified circumstances (such as ensuring compliance with the principles of research integrity), it may be necessary to review research data collected during the preparation of a thesis (including bachelor’s theses, master’s theses and doctoral dissertations) at a later date. If the student preparing the thesis is the Data Controller, Tampere University recommends that the student retain the research data for a period of five years. Students are responsible for securely storing this research data on their personal computers. The University does not assume responsibility for the storage of such data. Data must be stored in a format that ensures research participants cannot be identified by any reasonable means. These guidelines do not apply to medical research, which is governed by specific legal requirements regarding data retention. Students conducting medical research must verify the applicable data retention period well in advance and, if necessary, consult the data protection officers of the relevant research centre for further guidance.
