Question: When do I have to apply for accommodation?Answer: If you apply for accommodation from student housing provider TOAS, please apply accommodation immediately when the application period starts. The application for furnished rooms for Autumn semester 2025 will be opened on May 5th&nbsp;2025 at 9:00 (UTC+3:00) on <a href="https://toas.fi/en/ajankohtaista/application-period-for-furnished-rooms-autumn-semester-2025/">TOAS website</a>.&nbsp; Question: I do not have my residence permit yet, can I apply for housing?Answer: You do not have to have a residence permit ready to apply for accommodation at TOAS. &nbsp;Question: I have not been able to find an apartment. Can the university offer me a dorm room?Answer: Unfortunately, no. The university does not have its own dormitories, and therefore we cannot offer you accommodation. You can read more on finding accommodation on this page <a href="/en/node/3015?channel=study_guide&organisation=uni" target="_blank" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="34427aa3-464c-42fc-b8b4-5a3de937e266" data-entity-substitution="canonical">Accommodation</a>. &nbsp;Question: I have not heard back from TOAS nor gotten an accommodation offer from them and I applied right away when the application period opened. What should I do?Answer: Just wait patiently. In the spring and summer time TOAS is dealing with hundreds and hundreds of new applicants; they will get back to you as soon as your queue number is up and they have an apartment/room offer for you. Please do not send extra emails requesting updates on when you will receive an offer, this just slows the process down. &nbsp;Question: I got an apartment offer from TOAS starting 1 July, but I am not planning to move until August. What should I do?Answer: If you want the room/flat, accept the accommodation as instructed by TOAS. We strongly recommend that you do this. If you do not accept the offer, you will need to make a new application and you go to the end of the queue at TOAS. Please note that if you go to the end of the queue, you will most likely not get accommodation in time for the start of your studies and you will need to come up with some kind of temporary arrangements. &nbsp;Question: If I accept a room already in June, when will I need to start paying for it?Answer: You will have to start paying for your room when your lease starts as TOAS is holding the room/flat empty for you. &nbsp;Question: I will arrive in Tampere on a Sunday night, where can I collect my keys and who will take me to my flat?Answer: If you arrive at night or on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday), it's a good idea to book a hotel room for the first one or two nights. The TOAS key office is closed during these times, making it difficult to get the keys for your accommodation. During weekday daytime hours, your tutor can often assist with your key and provide advice on using public transport to reach your housing, or even help you get there. Alternatively, taking a taxi is a convenient option as it can drive you directly to your door. Taxis are available at taxi stands, the railway station, or can be called by a hotel to pick you up.&nbsp;Question: I do not have any winter clothes, furniture or household items. Where can I buy them affordably?Answer: There are many second-hand shops in Tampere. For example, <a href="https://uff.fi/aukioloajat-ja-yhteystiedot/" target="_blank">UFF</a> sells seasonally appropriate clothes, shoes and some household items in good condition at an affordable price. The offering of the room varies naturally depending on what is brought in. There are also many furniture stores that sell unused pieces of furniture and other items in Tampere, such as IKEA.

Accommodation

Question: On which campus will my studies take place?Answer: To check on which campus your studies take place, please check the webpage of your programme for the campus information. You can find your programme on the page <a href="/en/node/37338?channel=study_guide&organisation=uni" target="_blank" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="b30640f5-6543-410c-bfa2-1c2c697e4463" data-entity-substitution="canonical">Tampere University Master's Programmes</a>. Go to the page of your programme and check the campus information in the info box. &nbsp;Question: If I live in Hervanta, can I travel to city centre easily for my lectures (or vice versa)?Answer: Yes. There is an excellent tram and bus system (<a href="https://www.nysse.fi/en/front-page.html" target="_blank">Nysse</a>) in Tampere, making it easy to travel between the city centre and Hervanta. &nbsp;Question: Are there parking spaces reserved for students on campuses?Answer: Yes, on Hervanta and the city centre campuses. You need a parking permit in order to park your vehicle. You need to pay the SportUni membership fee in order to gain access to the gym. Question: How do I defer the start of my studies?Answer: If you are unable to begin your studies this year, you may have the option to defer your admission and start in the autumn of next year. For most programmes, it is possible to defer the start of your studies by at least one year. However, some programmes may not allow a one-year deferment. To confirm whether a one-year deferment is possible for your specific programme, please contact the education specialist for your degree (the person who sent your admission letter).To defer your studies, you must first accept the offered study place by the confirmation deadline. Please note that all conditions of the offer must be fulfilled by the specified deadline, even if you plan to defer.If you are required to pay tuition fees and have been awarded a scholarship, your scholarship will carry over to the deferred start. You will need to pay the remaining tuition only after the deferment.If you were not awarded a scholarship at the time of admission and are not eligible for the Early Bird offer—and your reason for deferring is not covered by our refund policy—you will need to pay the full tuition fee after the deferment.We will reach out in late July to all new students, who have accepted the study place offer by the given deadline, and provide further instructions concerning registration and deferment. What should I do?Answer: It is crucial to arrive in Tampere in time for Welcome Week. This week is mandatory for all new students because it provides essential information and support that will be vital throughout your studies. Many course registrations and important tasks are also completed during this time. Arriving after Welcome Week will make it significantly harder to catch up with your studies and integrate into the academic community. If it is absolutely impossible for you to arrive on time, you may need to consider deferring your studies to the next academic year. If you choose to arrive after Welcome Week, please note that the university will not make personalised arrangements to accommodate for late arrivals, and it will be your responsibility to catch up with your studies and to take care of any necessary tasks. Additionally, if you are liable to pay tuition, arriving late may affect your ability to meet the scholarship requirements for the following academic year.When you apply for your residence permit, it is a good idea to apply for it to start at least five (5) days before the start of Welcome Week at the very latest, so you will have time to get settled and organised in a new environment before your studies begin.

Deferment of studies

Question: I do not have enough money to pay the tuition fee in time to use the Early Bird offer. Can the offer be extended?Answer:&nbsp; Unfortunately, we cannot extend the Early Bird deadline unless you need the extension for unexpected circumstances out of your control such as the bank closing suddenly for an extended period of time. In such situations you need to provide us with some kind of evidence, e.g. a link to a news article with information on the matter in English. Therefore e.g. not procuring funds in advance is not a valid reason for being granted an extension.&nbsp;Question: I have been offered the 50% tuition fee scholarship at admission. Can I get an additional discount by using the Early Bird offer? Answer: No. If you have been offered the 50% tuition fee scholarship at admission, you are not eligible to use the Early Bird offer for an additional discount. The Early Bird offer is only for those who have not been offered a tuition fee scholarship at admission. Early Bird offer

Question: Do I have to pay the healthcare fee for students in higher education?Answer: Yes. The basic rule is that all higher education students are required to pay the KELA fee for each semester, regardless of their personal health insurances. This will grant you access to the Finnish student health services (FSHS). There are, however, a few exceptions if you have social security coverage from another EU/EEA country, Switzerland, Great Britain or Northern Ireland. The fee per semester is currently 35.60 EUR. (The fee can change a little bit annually, please check the KELA link below for this.) For autumn semester, the fee needs to be paid by the end of September. Making sure that you have adequate funding for the whole duration of your studies is extremely important.&nbsp;Question: Can I work in Finland to earn some extra money?Answer: You can work freely in Finland if you are a citizen of an EU Member State, Liechtenstein or Switzerland. If you need a residence permit for your studies, you can work up to 30 hours per week. Living expenses and working

Question: What is the refund policy concerning tuition fees?Answer: As a first year student, you have a right to a full refund (excluding any bank charges) of a tuition fee paid to Tampere University if:<ul><li>you have been admitted conditionally but do not fulfill conditional acceptance requirements on time and your study place is cancelled,</li><li>you are not granted a residence permit in Finland and therefore cannot start your studies,</li><li>your residence permit status changes before 31 July and you are no longer liable to pay fees (in such case the new Finnish residence permit card on which the exemption is based must be presented as proof before 31 July),</li><li>you are unable to start your studies due to long-term illness or parental leave.</li></ul>&nbsp;Question: I do not have enough money to pay the tuition fee in time to use the Early Bird offer. Can I pay the tuition fee in instalments?Answer: Yes, you can pay the tuition fee in instalments. However, all instalments must be paid before you can register as a student. Please note that you cannot enrol as a student until all instalments have been paid. You can find the instructions for making the payment(s) in your admission letter.&nbsp;Question: I cannot pay the tuition fee myself. Can another person pay the fee on my behalf?Answer: Yes, it is possible that another person pays your tuition fee. In this case their details will be provided on the payment form in the section 'Payer information' and the student's in the section 'Info for the receiver'.&nbsp;Question: I have paid the tuition fee, but it may take some time before the payment goes through. Will the Early Bird offer expire if Tampere University does not receive the payment by the Early Bird deadline?Answer: It is sufficient that you pay the fee by the deadline. The Early Bird offer will not expire even if the fee arrives to our account after the deadline, just as long as the payment was made to Flywire in time, which we can see on the payment system.&nbsp;Question: I have paid the tuition fee through Flywire. When will I receive a payment confirmation from the University?Answer: The University will notify you via email once your payment has been received. To provide proof of payment, for example to Migri when applying for a residence permit, you can download a payment confirmation from the Flywire payment portal.&nbsp;Question: Can I pay the tuition fee for the first year of studies semester by semester?Answer: No. In the first year of studies the tuition fee must be paid for both semesters before you can register as a student. NB! The payment deadline is earlier if you have not been offered 50% scholarship and are using the Early Bird offer. Please check the payment deadline for the Early Bird offer in your admission letter. In the following years it is possible to pay the tuition fee semester by semester, but not for the first year.&nbsp;

Payment of tuition fees

Question: I cannot register as attending on My Studyinfo -service. How can I register?Answer: If there are no suitable identification methods for foreigners available, please wait patiently for further instructions to be sent by the end of July. We will then contact all new students who have accepted the study place offer online by the given deadline and provide information about the registration as attending or absent for the next academic year and how to activate your user account.&nbsp;Question: Can I pay the Student Union membership fee together with the tuition fee through Flywire?Answer: No. The tuition fee is to be paid to the university, and the Student Union membership fee to the Student Union TREY. The university and TREY do not share a bank account, so the payments cannot be made together. You should pay only the tuition fee through Flywire, and the Student Union membership fee either through MyStudyinfo or with the payment instructions that will be provided in late July to all new students who have accepted their study place offer by the deadline specified in the admission letter.&nbsp;

Registration as a student

Question: I have booked a personal appointment to DVV, should I cancel it?Answer: Yes. Please follow the instructions provided on the page <a href="/en/node/6891?channel=study_guide&organisation=uni" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="1c8b3763-e68e-460a-9bc5-0710fd5eaed4" data-entity-substitution="canonical" target="_blank">Registration with the authorities for new degree students</a>.N.B.&nbsp;The only&nbsp;exception&nbsp;to above are&nbsp;those arriving with their families. If you register your whole family at the same time, you must&nbsp;book a separate time at the DVV office. In this case you do not need to come to campus registrations.&nbsp;Question: How long will it take to get my ID number/registration to be ready from DVV?Answer: The processing times vary a bit by bit depending of your application. You can check the current queue times at <a href="https://dvv.fi/en/processing-times">https://dvv.fi/en/processing-times</a>.Please remember to update your Finnish personal identity code in your student profile on Sisu once you receive it. Adding the code to your student profile on Sisu will enable you to activate the student discount on the local transportation system (<a href="https://www.nysse.fi/en/tickets-and-fares/students.html" target="_blank">Nysse</a>) and book appointments with the Finnish student health service (<a href="https://www.yths.fi/en/frontpage/" target="_blank">FSHS</a>).&nbsp;Question: I want to take care of the DVV registration already in advance, how do I do it?Answer: It is recommended to fill in the e-form in advance, but you cannot finalise the process from your home country as an in person meeting with the local DVV officials is required. Do not, however, book a personal slot at the DVV office but complete your registration on campus days. You can find the times and places under “1. In this case you do not need to come to campus registrations.&nbsp;Question: I already have registered with DVV, do I need to do it again at the University?Answer: If you have already finalised your DVV registration earlier and already have your ID (e.g. you have lived in Finland before your studies have started), you do not have to redo the registration. Registration with Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV)

Question: I cannot apply for a residence permit within seven days. Can I apply for it later?Answer: We strongly recommend that you initiate the residence permit application process within seven (7) days in order to get your application in before the queues become really long. The processing times can be lengthy during spring and summer, so that is why we tell students to get started on the application process as soon as possible. Question: I am unable to activate my TUNI user account. What can I do?Answer: The first step is making sure you have registered as attending. If you have paid the Student Union membership fee via My Studyinfo, please wait 2-3 days before trying to activate the user account. If you are unable to enrol as a student through My Studyinfo, please wait for further instructions that are sent in late July to all newly admitted students who have accepted their study place by the deadline specified in their admission letter.&nbsp;Question: I am a newly admitted student and I need to provide a student email address on the Flywire payment form. How do I get a student email?Answer: As you do not yet have a TUNI student email, simply write down your personal email address on the form when making the payment.
