Funding internship abroad

Erasmus+ grants for traineeships

You may apply for an Erasmus+ grant if you have a traineeship place in a country that is a member of the Erasmus+ programme and now during the new Erasmus+ programme it is also possible to apply for a traineeship grant to other countries (third countries not associated to the programme).

The amount of the long-term Erasmus+ traineeship grant depends on the duration of the traineeship and the destination country. The minimum duration of the long-term traineeship is two full calendar months.

Short-term traineeship may be implemented as blended mobility, which includes a physical period of 5–30 days and a compulsory virtual component completed as remote work from home country. For doctoral students the virtual component is not compulsory. In short-term blended traineeship, the combined minimum workload of the physical and virtual components must be 3 ECTS credits.

Working should be full-time, at least 30 hours a week. You will also need to earn credits from your traineeship to be eligible for an Erasmus+ grant. Make arrangements with the person responsible of traineeships at your faculty to include the traineeship in your degree.

Please note that if you are a doctoral student and employed by the University you are not entitled to the Erasmus+ traineeship grant. Doctoral students who are employed by Tampere University can take part in Erasmus+ staff exchanges and apply funding for max. 5 working days.

Simultaneous funding from several programmes administered by the EU or the Finnish National Agency for Education cannot be used to fund an Erasmus+ traineeship. University's/ faculty’s traineeship grants are also not meant to be used at the same time as the Erasmus+ traineeship grant. Almost all private and public organisations and companies are suitable places (also embassies and consulates), excluding the following:

  • EU organisations
  • Organisations that administer EU programmes (eg national Erasmus offices)

Traineeship can be paid, but the grant can't be awarded for traineeships where the salary is over 1430 € per month.

Applying for an Erasmus+ traineeship grant and application deadlines

There are four application rounds in each academic year and students apply for the grant via the Mobility-Online system. Please note that the Erasmus+ traineeship grant will not be awarded for a traineeship period that has already been completed.

All students going on Erasmus+ student mobility period will get a separate travel support that is based on the distance (km) between Tampere and the destination city. The distance is calculated with the help of the distance calculator provided by the European Commission: Distance Calculator | Erasmus+ (europa.eu)

Erasmus+ students are also entitled to a daily grant for two travel days (standard travel).

Short-term traineeship

Any programme or partner country:

  • 79 € per day up to the 14th day
  • 56 € per day 15th to the 30th day

You will also get travel support (please see the table above) and one travel day can be added before and after the traineeship. Grant is paid only for the physical duration of the traineeship.

You can be granted for short-term traineeship once per academic year.

Fewer opportunities top up and special needs grant

Students who go on mobilities within the Erasmus+ programme and who have families, are family carers, have disabilities, suffer from a severe or chronic health condition (min. moderate functional impairment) or have received international protection are entitled to a fixed-fee additional grant on top of the Erasmus+ mobility grant (fewer opportunities top up). The fewer opportunities top up in long-term traineeships is 250 € per month and in short-term traineeships 100 € (duration 5-14 days) or 150 € (duration 15-30 days).

Special needs and inclusion grants are intended to enable international exchange and internship in circumstances when a special need causes additional costs that are not covered by fewer opportunities top up or other sources. Special need can be an injury, impairment, physical or psychological illness or learning difficulty.

The grant can be awarded to accessible accommodation, assisted mobility or such study-related special arrangements as learning materials, preparatory visits and personal assistants. The application process is completely confidential.

Contact us well in advance if you are planning to apply for the special needs grant (mobility.tau(at)tuni.fi). The application should be submitted to programme coordinator, who will forward it to the Erasmus+ National Agency. All of the applications will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

For more information on special needs and inclusion grant, see the Finnish National Agency for Education's page.

Green travel support

If you travel to the city of your traineeship by train, bus or carpool (please note that ship/ ferry is not acceptable), you can get green travel support (check the table above). The requirement for receiving the green travel support is that you will travel the majority of the actual kilometers in a more environmentally friendly way. The green travel support is based on the distance (km) between Tampere and the city of the traineeship organisation. The distance is calculated with the help of the distance calculator provided by the European Commission: Distance Calculator | Erasmus+ (europa.eu). You will also receive a daily grant for maximum of 6 travel days. Daily grant is based on completed travel days. You will need to travel as directly as possible from the starting point to the destination.

You are entitled to the green travel grant when

  • you travel the outbound and return trip entirely in green.
  • or you travel the majority of the round trip in green (meaning that the kilometres travelled using low-emissions means of transport exceed the kilometres traveled by ship/flying/driving alone).

You can apply for green travel support in Mobility-Online. You will need to fill in and sign a green travel declaration form (you will receive this by email). Fill in to the green travel declaration form your itinerary for both ways. Upload the completed form to Mobility-Online. You also need to keep travel receipts and, if needed, present them to Tampere University to verify green travelling.

Financial aid for students

Because the Erasmus+ traineeship must be included in your degree studies, which means that you must earn credits towards your compulsory or optional studies, you can also apply for regular student financial aid for the traineeship period. If you decide to apply for financial aid during your Erasmus+ traineeship, contact Kela for more information.
