Tuition fees

Tuition fees apply to students who are citizens of countries outside the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland who study in Bachelor's or Master's degrees taught in English. Fees range between 8 000 and 12 000 euros per academic year depending on the programme.

You will be exempt from tuition fees if you are a non-EU/EEA citizen but have one of the following residence permits:

• permanent residence permit card in Finland (type P)
• EU residence permit for third-country citizens with long-term residence permit card in Finland (type P-EU)
• EU Blue Card in Finland
• EU family member's residence card in Finland
• Brexit residence permit card (type SEU = Right of residence under the withdrawal agreement, or P SEU = Right of permanent residence under the withdrawal agreement)
• a residence permit on the basis of temporary protection in Finland.

You are also exempt if you have a residence permit based on family ties and your family member has a permanent residence permit or EU citizenship. In addition, a continuous residence permit card in Finland (type A), may exempt you from paying tuition fees if it is granted on grounds other than studying. However, you are required to pay tuition fees in the following cases:

• If your first residence permit in Finland was granted for the purpose of studying, you are required to pay tuition fees, even if you later obtained a continuous residence permit (type A) on other grounds.
• If you have a continuous residence permit (type A) based on family ties, but your first permit was granted for studies, and your family member currently also has a continuous resident permit (type A) and they originally came to Finland on a residence permit granted for studying, you are also required to pay tuition fees.
• If your continuous residence permit (type A) is granted for studying, you are required to pay tuition fees.

Tuition fee liability is checked from all applicants, and permit history will be requested from Migri. The exempting residence permit must be valid at the start of each semester when you enrol as attending. Please note that a residence permit in another EU/EEA country does not exempt you from the tuition fee.

There are no tuition fees in doctoral programmes.

TAMK tuition fee from 2024 onwards is 12 000 € per academic year.

Students who have started in 2023 or before remain in the previous pricing categories of 9 800 € for Bachelor's degrees and 10 800 € for Master's degrees. TAMK reserves the right to reconsider pricing for each application round based on actual costs of providing education and developing student services.

You must initiate the payment in the portal 

 -> enter the required price
 -> choose payment from your country of choice
 -> choose the preferred method of payment

If you choose a bank transfer option, the platform will eventually give you the details to take to your bank for the transfer. You must first fill in your details so that the payment can be identified as yours. An initiated payment will stay valid in Flywire only for a few days, after which it will expire. Make sure to complete the transfer in that timeframe.

CONTINUING STUDENTS - Registration and tuition fee payment

All fee-paying students need to register for attendance in the following academic year by paying their 1^st installment of the next academic year's tuition fee payment between 1 March – 31 May annually. Study registry is updated for attendance, payment and possible scholarship waivers after payment is received for Migri (Finnish Immigration Service) data share.

Immigration / citizenship status changes

Exemptions from tuition fee liability have changed due to changes in the Universities of Applied Sciences Act which came into force on 1 December 2024. If you have currently been given a non-paying student status, your status will not change as long as your permit is valid. In the future you will be exempt from tuition fees only based on the permit types listed at the top of the page.

If your status changes, for example you receive permanent residence (permit type P) or EU/EEA citizenship during your studies, provide a full copy of the decision or a verifying ID / permit card to welcome.tamk [at] tuni.fi (welcome[dot]tamk[at]tuni[dot]fi). Dates of issue and validity are then checked against your study right period. Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, the change of status will take effect from the following starting date of the autumn / spring term (1 August / 1 January).

Please also note that if changes occur during studies that are initiated by yourself as a student, e.g. change of degree titles, transfers between universities, or extension of study right, your liability to pay tuition fees will be re-examined. Therefore your non-paying status may end before the end of your permit validity if you change the circumstances of your studies, for example change degrees (degree title changes) or universities (transfer) or apply for more time to complete your degree. 

Late registration and late payments

Although it is possible to register late without losing your study right and paying for reinstatement until 31 July, all payments after 31 May carry a monthly late fee of 5% of the principal sum. Registration after the academic year has started on 1 August annually requires applying for reinstatement of study right with a separate handling fee. Reinstatement is based on the discretion of the head of the degree programme. 

Late 2^nd installment payments are accepted until 30 November. Non-payment will lead to loss of study right on 31 December unless the balance due with applied 5% monthly late fees are paid.

Scholarship waivers for the 2^nd installment

Study register will be checked annually on 15 August for all fee-paying students in attendance. The check will be done on the next business day when 15 August falls on a weekend. 

Make sure to see that your summer courses / training periods are evaluated before that date. If your course / training period continues past 1 August, discuss the situation with your supervising teacher, as only courses completed between 1 August – 31 July can be counted in. They can either split the course credits or give you a partial evaluation, if you contact them in time. All credit limits are cumulative, so a split evaluation will not bring problems in the following year. Limits which award Academic Award scholarship waivers are cohort-based (= based on the year your study right begins) so different students have different limits. 

Student who has been found guilty of academic fraud, or has received a written warning issued by TAMK, or has been temporarily suspended due to a case of fraud shall not be granted scholarship waivers.

Language skills requirement 

If you have started your Bachelor’s studies 1 August 2021 or later, your Academic Award scholarship waiver consist of your study records check (see above) and a Finnish language test. The skills level to reach is not set for each year, as students may be starting from very different starting points based on how long they have already been in Finland. The only condition is that you can only use one level of test once.

To alleviate the current situation with the limited YKI tests available in the region especially in the Basic level, TAMK has previously arranged a supplementary language test on campus in April to ensure that everyone has a chance to reach the full Academic Award scholarship waiver of 50%. Registration information will be sent to all fee-paying students directly by email.

PLEASE NOTE: You can only take this TAMK standardized test once, so if you are a 2^nd or 3^rd year student who has passed/failed the test before, this is not an option for you. If you have not taken the test before, you are welcome to register.

Last possible YKI-test date will be at the end of May with results arriving over the summer break (must be submitted to welcome.tamk [at] tuni.fi (welcome[dot]tamk[at]tuni[dot]fi)  by 15 August). Registration in case of anticipated early graduation

Students must all register for a full year if their current study right continues for the full year. Students can only be considered an “early graduate” when they have all their courses evaluated in the registry and they have applied for graduation. See check list for graduation

Anything until then is pure speculation, as anything could happen in studies and in life in general that cannot be anticipated. Only after that point can any full or partial reimbursement be considered and of course liability to pay ends when you graduate so you save the amount that would be due for the remained of your study right.

Registering for overtime

You should always apply for the extension first, and once you receive your decision, then pay your tuition fee. 

For students applying for extension before 1 January 2025, the lower tuition fee of 1 500 € / year is in place. According to TAMK degree regulations (until 31 December 2024) overtime +1 year is always granted as a full year for tuition fee paying students, to allow using the legal minimum, to avoid back-to-back extensions and allow for residence permit renewal.

After 1 January 2025 according to the updates in Universities of Applied Sciences Act students will still have a legal right to extension (max +1 year) for completing the degree, but tuition fees must start to cover the costs of education at the minimum. TAMK has therefore had to raise the tuition fee to regular price of 12 000 € / year or 6 000 € / semester, starting from 1 January 2025. Tuition fee paying students are in turn from 2025 onwards allowed to apply for a full year or only one semester of extension to keep costs to a minimum. 

Registering for absence

If you plan to register as absent for the next academic year, you must do so before the attendance registration deadlines pass. Your scholarship and credit accumulation situation will then be “frozen” for a year:

• 1^st installment: As you register as absent for 2025/26, you do not pay anything as there are no fees for absent students. When registration for 2026/27 is timely, your study affairs coordinator will send you a reminder to register. When you register after your absence, then you pay the 1^st installment for the academic year when you will again be in attendance as present.
• 2^nd installment: Your completed study years will be considered for the scholarship waiver in the credits check which will be resumed on 15 August 2026 when you are again enrolled as present.

Please note that if you have already paid your fee and later change your registration, your payment will be held and transferred to cover the next year of attendance. Refunds are issued in these cases only if you resign from TAMK. 

Cohort-based structures

Limits which award Academic Award scholarship waivers are cohort-based (= based on the year your study right begins) so different students have different limits. Your terms and conditions will remain the same throughout your studies unless a change TAMK makes in the terms and conditions is beneficial to your cohort, in which case it will be applied to you as well.
