Credit transfer for studies
Credit transfer for studies means that you can transfer prior higher education studies to the current degree if they meet the learning outcomes of the degree programme/the course in question. Previous studies can be recognised as part of compulsory or free-choice studies. Any studies completed in other higher education institutions can be included in the elective studies if there are remaining credits. As a rule, the number of credits in your degree must not be exceeded.
The principles of credit transfer also apply to CampusOnline studies and cross-institutional studies. Possibility for credit transfer should be confirmed in advance in the guidance discussion or from the teacher in charge of the course at TAMK. These studies can also be included in the free-choice studies of the degree, if there is remaining credits.
Some of TAMK's degree programmes may exceptionally have such separately defined studies that cannot be transferred with studies completed elsewhere. You can have information on these exceptions from the student counsellor or teacher tutor.
The transferred studies completed elsewhere are entered to the study register with their original grades.
The general expiry time for studies is ten years. The head of degree programme can decide on a different expiry time in a degree programme. (Degree Regulations 28§)
You can find the instructions for submitting a CreTa application at the bottom of this page.
Credit transfer for studies completed in international exchange
TAMK follows the credit transfer system approved by the European Union and thus studies and practical training passed abroad are fully transferred to the pursued degree. Credit transfer can only be denied if the student does not attain the level required by the receiving higher education institution or fulfil the conditions set by the participating higher education institutions. The recognition of studies completed during an international exchange is regulated by TAMK’s degree regulations (21 §).
Credit transfer for international exchanges and practical trainings does not take place in Creta accreditation system but through international coordinators (long exchanges) and training supervisors (international practical trainings). The teacher in charge enters short study trips and exchanges to PAKKI.
Credit Transfer Process for Studies
A) Creating the individual study plan and comparing previous studies with curriculum´s learning outcomes
Make your individual study plan right at the beginning of studies with the student counsellor or teacher tutor. Your previous studies and the possibilities for credit transfer in the current degree programme are established in the guidance discussion.
B) Submitting the credit transfer application for studies in the CreTa accreditation system
Submit your proposal for the credits you wish to transfer in Pakki (toolbar symbol H, where you will find the eAHOT credit transfer application). The credit transfer application, along with its attachments, must be sent to the degree program's credit transfer handler as early as possible, but at least three weeks before the start of the course. It is important to complete the application following to the given instructions.
If the credit transfer involves broader studies or entire study modules, you should plan the transfer using the degree program’s curriculum Excel template, which you can obtain from the student counsellor. You will review the plan together with the student counsellor or your teacher tutor. Once finalised, attach the completed credit transfer plan (Excel template) to the credit transfer application and send it to the student counsellor. The student counsellor will process your application and forward it for approval to the degree programme’s approver.
C) Processing of the application
The degree programme’s credit transfer application handler reviews your application and either supports or does not support the credit transfer.
D) The credit transfer decision
The person appointed by the degree programme makes the decision on credit transfer based on the handler's proposal.
Courses can also be transferred partly. In these cases, the teacher in charge of the course or studies proposes the potential course activities with which you can supplement your prior learning. After completing the required additional activities, you are considered to have attained the course objectives.
E) Entry to the study register and filing of decisions
Once the credit transfer approver has approved the application and saved the decision, the transferred credit is automatically added to your personal study plan (PSP). Studies completed elsewhere are entered into the study register with their original names and grades.
For broader credit transfers, such as those for transfer students or students with a prior higher education degree, the study administration coordinator registers the transfer as a study module or course in the study register and PSP.
F) Amendment request
If you are not satisfied with the credit transfer decision, you have a right to make an amendment request in accordance with the instructions given in TAMK's degree regulations (26 §).
