Tampere University Student’s Guide

Thesis weekend

Thesis weekend ('Opinnäyterupeama') is an intensive working weekend for Tampere University’s students to advance their thesis. The purpose is to advance your bachelor’s or master’s thesis after selecting the topic and thesis supervisor.

Thesis support weekends will be arranged on weekends. The working weekend is intensive, with working time on Friday evenings from 4 pm to 8 pm, on Saturdays from 9 am to 4 pm and on Sundays from 10 am to 4 pm. The events will be held on the Hervanta campus and are free of charge. The university serves the participants breakfast on Saturday and Sunday. Working weekends are mainly held in Finnish, but you are welcome to participate in the discussions also in English.

Peer support throughout the weekend

During the thesis support weekends, students work to achieve the goals they have set for themselves. It is beneficial and highly encouraged that, before the weekend, students make a list of the things they will work on during the weekend.

Trained peer tutors will be present throughout the weekend. They are responsible for organising the working facilities and scheduling working time and breaks using the Pomodoro technique. Peer tutors also arrange joint discussion sessions where the students can share their experiences and get peer support in thesis-related matters. Peer tutors can't help with the substance of the thesis. The appointed supervisor is responsible for guiding the substance of the thesis.

Benefits of the weekend

A thesis support weekend may

  • help you to get started on writing your thesis

  • make it easier to return to the thesis after a break

  • help you to set concrete goals and achieve them

  • support the planning and scheduling of the thesis, e.g. in situations where you combine studies with working

  • help to keep on schedule and support graduation

  • provide an opportunity for social support, sharing experiences and feelings with a peer, and enable experiencing a sense of community.

The students who have participated in Thesis weekend have described their experiences in the following ways:

"Thanks for organizing the thesis workshop again! The breakfast was really great."

Thank you to the peer tutors for keeping us on time and making it all smooth sailing from start to finish.
