<div><p>All new<strong> international degree</strong> and <strong>exchange</strong> <strong>students</strong> need a <strong>Finnish personal identity code</strong> (henkilötunnus). Students arriving from<strong> </strong>outside the EU/EEA/EFTA may receive the code together with their Finnish residence permit, but this is not guaranteed. Therefore, all students will still need to complete the DVV registration process after arrival.</p></div>

<p>After arriving in Tampere, all international degree and exchange students must either apply for the identity code or complete the registration required to receive it. This process is commonly referred to as DVV registration (registration with the Digital and Population Data Services Agency). The easiest option is to follow the registration instructions provided during Welcome Week. If you arrive late, you can complete the registration directly at the DVV office.</p><p>Please note that receiving the Finnish personal identity code in Tampere can take <strong>from one day up to 8 weeks</strong>. As soon as you receive an official document showing your Finnish personal identity code, <a href="https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=r0Rp-nzM2EyRVMARMnmJEAQFEhAoKa5NmcQG9XaYao1UMVNLUUlRMUUyU0pUU0ZLU1FTNTdHNE5CSy4u" target="_blank" data-entity-type="external"><strong>submit the document via the online form</strong></a> to the Student Affairs Office.</p>

How to get the Finnish personal identity code (DVV registration)

<div><div><p>Before leaving Tampere University, please ensure that <a href="https://sis-tuni.funidata.fi/student/profile/basic-info" target="_blank" data-entity-type="external">your student information in <strong>Sisu</strong></a> includes your <strong>Finnish personal identity code</strong>, as the University is required to collect it for administrative purposes. In addition, you may need the code to verify your identity in everyday situations, such as when using banking services (including opening a bank account), visiting health centres or hospitals, or accessing other official services that require reliable identification.</p></div></div><div><h3><strong>Important note</strong></h3><p>The Finnish personal identity code was formerly known as a social security number. Today, it is not related to Finnish social security benefits. It is used <strong>only for identification purposes</strong>.</p></div>

Why the code is needed (Sisu and everyday services)

<div><p>Once you have received your Finnish personal identity code from DVV, please <a href="https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=r0Rp-nzM2EyRVMARMnmJEAQFEhAoKa5NmcQG9XaYao1UMVNLUUlRMUUyU0pUU0ZLU1FTNTdHNE5CSy4u" target="_blank" data-entity-type="external"><strong>submit it to the Student Affairs Office</strong></a> so it can be added to your student record in Sisu. DVV usually sends the code in a document delivered by email after you have completed the DVV registration. You can submit your code in one of two ways. The preferred option is to upload the DVV document via the <a href="https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=r0Rp-nzM2EyRVMARMnmJEAQFEhAoKa5NmcQG9XaYao1UMVNLUUlRMUUyU0pUU0ZLU1FTNTdHNE5CSy4u" target="_blank" data-entity-type="external">university’s online form</a>. Alternatively, you may visit the Student Affairs Office on any Tampere University campus and present the DVV document in person together with your passport or EU/EEA identity card. In either case, make sure the document you provide clearly shows your Finnish personal identity code and that your copy/photo is readable.</p><p>If your Finnish personal identity code is already printed on your plastic Finnish residence permit card, you may submit a clear photo of the card instead of the DVV document. Please ensure the photo is sharp and that all relevant details are visible.</p></div>

How to submit your code to the Student Affairs Office?

<p>DVV often delivers the personal identity code via an encrypted email message with restricted access. If you are unable to open the encrypted message or download the attached PDF containing your code, please contact DVV directly at <strong><span class="spamspan"><span class="u">international</span> [at] <span class="d">dvv.fi</span></span></strong> and request that they resend the message with your personal identity code. To protect your privacy, avoid sharing your personal identity code through unsecured channels unless you are specifically instructed to do so by DVV or Tampere University.</p>

If you cannot open DVV’s encrypted email

<div><p>If you have already completed the required registration steps at the beginning of the semester but still have not received your Finnish personal identity code, please contact DVV directly by email at <strong><span class="spamspan"><span class="u">international</span> [at] <span class="d">dvv.fi</span></span></strong> and ask them to check the status of your registration. If you missed the DVV registration arranged on campus at the start of the semester, you should complete the registration at DVV as soon as possible.
