Mobility and internationalisation in doctoral studies

Research is international by nature. The emergence of new research topics, technologies, networks and results is crucially influenced by the mobility and internationalisation of researchers, which forms an integral part of the research career starting from the doctoral programme phase. The University encourages researchers to engage in international mobility, carry out research and establish contacts with foreign universities and research institutes in their field. It is also possible to include internationally completed studies and research periods in the doctoral degree. Mobility also improves the career opportunities of researchers and develops their skills.

Tampere University participates in various exchange programmes and networks through which you may seek and exchange period in different parts of the world. All the student exchange destinations are listed on the Mobility-Online portal.

Please note that grants are not available for doctoral students holding a salaried position (even part time) due to reasons of taxation.

At the moment there are no travel grants available in the international mobility services for self-organised research visits abroad or conference travel. Doctoral students can apply for Erasmus+ grants, grants for long-term mobility periods at partner universities of Tampere University and short-term travel grants.

Please check funding opportunities also from the page Funding doctoral studies.

Industrial Research Fund at Tampere University of Technology and The University of Tampere Foundation awards grants also for conference travel.

Erasmus+ student exchange

Exchange opportunities offered by the Erasmus+ programme are also available for doctoral students during their degree studies. You can receive Erasmus+ funding (student exchange and/or traineeship) for a maximum of 12 months per study cycle.

For Erasmus+ student exchange opportunities, please check the destination from your study field in the Mobility‑Online portal.

More information on application periods and grants for Erasmus+ student exchange can be found in the Student's Guide on the pages Application instructions for student exchange and Funding studies abroad.

Erasmus+ traineeship

Erasmus+ traineeship is also available to doctoral students. Doctoral research and data collection can be carried out as an Erasmus+ traineeship. In addition to companies, public and non‑profit organisations, the host organisation can also be, for example, a research group operating at a university.

More information on Erasmus+ traineeship grants and application periods can be found in the Student's Guide Funding traineeships abroad.

Short-term study option abroad

It is also possible to study abroad through short courses, such as summer or winter schools. These courses offer an opportunity to deepen your field of study and improve your language skills in an intensive way.

Read more about short-term study options abroad in the Student's Guide on the page Short-term study options abroad.

Erasmus+ teaching and staff training

Doctoral students who are employed on a salaried position may apply for Erasmus+ teaching or staff exchange periods of approximately one week.
Read more on the intranet: Erasmus staff exchange and Erasmus+ teacher exchange.
