Time limit for degree completion

Do you need extension time for your studies?

  • If you are unable to complete your degree during the target completion time of your studies, you may apply for a statutory extension time while in your final semester.
  • If you are unable to complete your degree during the duration of the study right (target completion time of the studies + statutory extension time), you may apply for a discretionary extension time.

You can find more information about the study right and the target completion time from Right to study and target times to complete the degree -page.

Application for an extension

The application must be submitted by 30 November in the autumn semester or 31 May in spring semester. Both, statutory and discretionary extention time must be applied when your current study right is still active. The application for extension time can only be submitted during the last semester of your active study right. The application for an extension is made using the Aini extension application.

Aini extension application

Within the application, you draft a plan and schedule for completing your studies. If necessary, plan your studies with a teacher tutor or study counsellor. You should also outline any possible special circumstances concerning your application.

Statutory extension time

You can get a statutory extension for one year at the most. The application for statutory extension is free of charge. Statutory extension time is awarded by the study counsellor of your degree programme.

Discretionary extension time

Discretionary extension time can only be awarded after the statutory extension time has been granted and used. You may be granted a discretionary extension for a year at the most (a semester at a time), and your graduation must be realistic within that time. When applying for a discretionary extension, most of your degree credits must be completed. The statutory processing fee for a discretionary application for an extension is 50 €. Discretionary extension time is awarded by the dean of faculty.

Tuition fee-paying students

If you require an additional time for completing the degree, you should apply for the extension first. Wait for the positive decision and then complete your payment of the extension tuition fee of 6 000 € / semester through Flywire.

What if discretionary extension time is not granted?

You may have different routes to complete your degree. Learn about the different opportunities to complete the missing studies.

Professional Teacher Education

If you study in professional teacher education, you can have a semester of extension time at the most. Most of your studies have to be ready when applying for extension time and your graduation has to be realistic during the extension time. Please discuss your study plan with the teacher of your group before filling in the application.

Please note that extension time cannot be granted if you already have completed the studies demanded for the degree.

A statutory fee (50 €) is charged for processing the application. Please remember to attach a receipt on the fee to the application.
