Getting to know AI
Getting to Know AI is a learning package designed for all Tampere University students. It invites you to explore and reflect on how AI tools can support your learning and competence development, while encouraging their responsible and purposeful use in your studies.
The module includes 6 videos and reflection questions.

The reflection questions are presented below each video. Think about the themes presented in the videos from your own perspective. We also encourage you to have group discussions in academic tutor groups, thesis seminars or just at the lunch table. When it comes to utilizing AI tools, talking to others, learning from others, and thinking together are the most agile ways to get and stay at the cutting edge of developments in your own field.

Part 1: Introduction to Getting to Know AI: Why Does AI Matter to All of Us?
In this part, we will guide you to reflect on why AI matters to all of us.
Part 2: What is AI?
In this part, you'll explore how AI generates responses and why its outputs can be compelling even when they're inaccurate or incomplete.
Think for yourself and discuss in a group:
How does AI generate responses?
Why can an AI output sound convincing, even if it is incorrect or incomplete? Why is it important to evaluate and interpret the responses critically?
Part 3: AI Literacy
AI literacy is the ability to act thoughtfully, critically, and responsibly in an AI-shaped information environment. It is not only technical skills, but also an understanding of the principles of AI, the ability to write appropriate prompts, the ability to evaluate outputs, and the readiness to consider the opportunities and challenges of AI. In this part, you will explore what kind of AI literacy you need as a university student and a future professional.

Why Is It Important to Continuously Develop Your AI Literacy? How Can You Do It?
Part 4: Responsible and sustainable use of AI
The effects of the use of AI are on at least three levels: you and your own work, the environment, and the academic and wider community. In this part, you will consider when the use of AI is justified, when it can cause harm, and how you can make responsible choices as a student.
Think for yourself and discuss in a group:
What does it mean to use artificial intelligence responsibly? When should you avoid using AI?
How do you identify a situation where the use of AI can harm your own work, the work of others, the trust of the community or the environment?
Part 5: Learning with AI
Artificial intelligence can support studying, but learning takes place through time, effort and your own thinking. In this part, you will consider when AI can genuinely support your learning and progress, and when relying on it may reduce opportunities to develop the skills your studies aim to foster. The key is to maintain ownership of your own work, guide the process yourself and give time for slow thinking.

Why does learning require slow thinking, effort, and the ability to tolerate things being unfinished?
When can AI help you progress without compromising your learning? How?
What do you do in a situation where the task seems difficult and the use of artificial intelligence would tempt you to take a shortcut?
