Accident insurance for students
Tampere University of Applied Sciences Ltd's principal insurance company is LähiTapiola.
What is an accident?
A sudden and unexpected event which is caused by an external reason and causes an unwanted injury to the insured
- Event: e.g. tripping, falling, dropping, slipping, hit, twisting, cut
- Injury: e.g. fracture, wound, break, strain, bruise, dislocation, bumb, concussion
Compensation for an injury or illness requires that the injury or illness is causally related to the incident.
Which insurance covers the accident?
An accident may be covered by the statutory accident insurance or the group accident insurance.
Statutory accident insurance
The accident is covered by the statutory accident insurance if the accident occurs:
- during an unpaid practical training that is part of TAMK studies
- on the way to or from an unpaid practical training
- while participating in practical instruction, such as laboratory work at TAMK
Note! Statutory patient insurance covers any harm caused to another person during teaching activities (at TAMK) in Social and Health Care education programs. For example, if a student practices taking a blood sample from another student and an injury occurs during the teaching situation, the damage is covered by the insurance policy for teaching activities in the Social and Health Care sector. Or, if a physiotherapy student causes harm to another student during a teaching activity (at TAMK) by providing incorrect treatment, the damage is covered by the insurance policy for Physical Therapy Institutions.
If you have an accident during an unpaid internship that is part of your TAMK studies, or on the way to or from such an internship, or during practical instruction at TAMK,
Follow these steps:
- If the accident requires immediate medical attention, seek treatment from LähiTapiola’s healthcare partner (Mehiläinen, Terveystalo, or Pihlajalinna). In urgent situations, you may go to any available emergency medical provider. Present your Kela-card at the healthcare facility and inform them during your visit that you are a student at Tampere University of Applied Sciences, and that the university’s insurance provider is LähiTapiola.
Report the incident to your teacher and TAMK’s Service Point (TAMK’s Main Campus B1-44, email: servicepoint.tamk [at] tuni.fi (servicepoint[dot]tamk[at]tuni[dot]fi), tel. +358504142416). You must provide the necessary details about the accident so that the Service Point staff can submit an accident report to the insurance company. After this, you will receive an insurance certificate from LähiTapiola on your phone, which includes details of your coverage and can be used to access medical care if needed. LähiTapiola also uses a commitment-to-pay text message for medications, which you will receive on your phone. With the commitment-to-pay, you can receive your medications free of charge at the pharmacy.

If you have incurred expenses due to the accident, please fill out the expense report yourself on LähiTapiola’s website. To complete the expense report, you will need the claim number for your accident. LähiTapiola will send you the claim number via text message to the phone number you provided, once TAMK’s Service Point has submitted the accident report to the insurance company. You log in to the expense report using your personal online banking credentials. After logging in, select “Accident” and choose the insurance option “Employer’s or entrepreneur’s occupational accident insurance or its extension for leisure time”.
The expense report will ask about the amount of possible reimbursement from Kela. The reimbursement is usually considered by showing your Kela card either when registering for the appointment or when purchasing medication at the pharmacy. If the document you received shows that the Kela reimbursement has not been deducted from the cost of the doctor’s visit or prescription medication, you can first apply for the reimbursement from Kela at the following address:

Insurance coverage for international students
International students who are completing a Finnish degree at TAMK are covered by TAMK’s statutory accident insurance.
The statutory accident insurance for students does not cover those who come to Finland temporarily to study a foreign degree at a foreign institution and who are in Finland for an internship or student exchange related to their studies. In that case, the student must be insured in their home country. Exchange students, however, are covered by the institution’s voluntary group accident insurance. For illnesses, they must obtain their own travel insurance.
Insurance coverage for TAMK students during exchange studies and internships abroad
The accident insurances are valid as in Finland. Tampere University of Applied Sciences does not provide travel insurance for students (travel insurance = traveller’s insurance and luggage insurance).
