Grants and funding for exchange

TAMK students usually fund their exchange period through an Erasmus+ grant and financial aid provided by Kela. In certain circumstances, additional funding may also be available. Before going on exchange, students must submit the required grant application and ensure that they are entitled to receive Kela financial aid for the duration of their exchange.

Erasmus+ grant

Students going on Erasmus+ or Erasmus+ Global exchange can apply for Erasmus+ grant through the SoleGRANT system. You can apply for a grant as soon as you have

• confirmed exchange application in SoleMOVE
• received an acceptance letter/e-mail from the host university
• purchased a travel insurance

We pay Erasmus+ grants twice a month, 15. and 30./31. day of the month.

Important!

The first installment of the grant (80 %) will be paid no earlier than 1 month before the departure date. The final grant amount is calculated on the basis of the actual dates of the exchange period as stated in the Arrival/Departure Certificate. Once the calculation has been completed, either the remaining balance of the grant will be paid to you or you will be issued with an invoice for any overpayment.

The grant is only paid for the period during which you are required to be present at the host institution. The start date of the exchange period is usually the first day of orientation, and the end date is the day of your last lecture, examination, or other exchange-related activity requiring your attendance.

The grant cannot be paid for any additional days beyond this period, even if you remain at your exchange destination for longer or are required to pay accommodation costs for a period extending beyond your actual exchange dates.

If your exchange period is significantly shorter than originally planned, you may be required to repay part of the grant you have already received. For this reason, it is important to provide the most accurate exchange dates possible when submitting your grant application. For example, you should not indicate the entire autumn semester unless you are genuinely required to be present at the host institution for the whole period.

ERASMUS+ GRANTS FOR EXCHANGE STUDIES / TRAINING ABROAD 2026–27:

* UK: Erasmus+ grant (540 €/month) available for students going on to the following universities in the UK in 2026-27:

• Edge Hill University
• Edinburgh Napier University
• Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU)
• University of Derby
• University of Reading
• University of Salford

Erasmus+ Global grant

Students going on exchange to the following universities outside the EU in 2026–2027 can apply for Erasmus+ Global grant:

• Albania: University of Tirana (for Business Administration/International Business, and Professional Teacher Education)
• Australia: Western Sydney University (for Paramedicine/Nursing)
• South Africa: North-West University (primarily for Nursing)
• USA: North Carolina State University (primarily for Bioproduct Engineering, Textile and Material Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering)

Study grant is 700 €/month. Travel grant is calculated based on the distance between TAMK and the host university.

Travel grant and green travel

Erasmus+ students are eligible for a travel grant. The amount of the grant is based on the distance between TAMK and the host university. You do not need to apply for the travel grant separately, as it is automatically included in your Erasmus+ grant.

When going on an Erasmus+ exchange, you may also be eligible for additional support for green travel if the main part of your journey, or at least one direction of your round trip, is completed using low-emission means of transport.

Sustainability during exchange and green travel

Fixed additional grants in Erasmus+ programme (fewer opportunities top-up)

Students who

• have families (with minor children)
• are family carers
• have disabilities
• suffer from a severe or chronic health condition
• have received international protection

and who go on short- or long-term mobilities within the Erasmus+ programme are entitled to a fixed-fee additional grant on top of the ordinary Erasmus+ mobility grant. The student has to only prove belonging to one of the aforementioned groups in order to get the grant. The supplement is available for both studies and traineeship abroad.

The right to the fewer opportunities top-up grant is proven with a declaration on honour signed by both the student and TAMK International Office. Bring the signed form and required attachments (Extract from population register or Doctor’s certificate/Doctor’s statement) to International Office at the Main Campus room B1-15.

Application forms:

TAMK Foundation grant

The foundation reserves funds annually to grant 20 grants of 1600 € (spring or autumn semester) and 5 grants of 2500 € (full academic year) for international study exchanges outside the EU. If the number of applicants exceeds 25 per year, recipients will be selected based on academic performance in order of merit. 

In addition, the foundation annually awards 20 grants of 1400 € – 2500 € for international practical training outside the EU

Grant criteria

• The exchange/practical training must take place outside the EU.
• The exchange must be with a university that has an existing collaboration agreement with TAMK.
  • An up-to-date list of non-European partner institutions can be found via the SoleMOVE search tool. Select TAMK as the institution. Click on Destination search. Next, click on Advanced search and choose Bilateral agreement as the exchange programme.
  • Further information on the partner institutions is available at outgoing.tamk [at] tuni.fi (outgoing[dot]tamk[at]tuni[dot]fi).
• The applicant must have the endorsement of a supervising teacher or another academic advisor familiar with their studies, confirming the suitability of the exchange/practical training for their studies.
• The student must obtain health insurance for their free time (including medical expenses and repatriation).
• The exchange/practical training must be confirmed. The applicant must have received an acceptance from the exchange destination (an acceptance letter or a message)/Learning Agreement for Traineeship signed by three parties. 
• The exchange must last at least one semester (spring or autumn). The practical training must last at least two months.
• The grant is intended to cover travel and accommodation costs.
• The grant must be applied for before the start of the exchange/practical training.
• The grant cannot be granted for an exchange in the student’s home country.

The grant is open for continuous applications, and decisions are made monthly (excluding July). Grant applications can be submitted at the grant system of Tampere University of Applied Sciences Foundation.
