Checklist for incoming exchange students

Welcome new exchange students!

TAMK welcomes you to study with us for a semester or two as an exchange student! Find out what you need to take care of before your stay and after you have arrived to Tampere. Please remember to read our application instructions and course information for exchange students. A brief summary of all other important things to remember can be found below.

Pre-arrival information

    Arriving in Tampere

    Please check if you need a residence permit, a mobility notification or a Schengen visa (temporary visit of less than 90 days) to enter Finland for your studies. This depends on your citizenship and how long your studies will last.

    Registration of the right of residence

    If you stay in Finland longer than three months, you have to register with the Finnish Authorities within three months after your arrival in Finland.

    Student health insurance

    Citizens of EU/EEA countries should acquire a European Health Insurance Card (EHEC) from their home countries prior to coming to Finland. If you are a non-EU/EEA/EFTA national, you are required to take out an insurance policy when you apply for a residence permit.

    Student housing

    There are two companies offering furnished rooms or apartments for incoming exchange students at a student-friendly price in Tampere. Remember to apply for housing before you get the official Letter of Acceptance from TAMK.

    Welcome Week for exchange students

    TAMK organises a Welcome Week for all new exchange students at the beginning of each semester. There you will receive information on studies, practicalities related to living in Tampere, university services, and the student union.

    International student tutoring

    Students´ Union Tamko will assign a student tutor to every exchange student. Your tutor will contact you by e-mail and help you with any questions that you may have before your arrival.

    Exchange student’s student union membership and student card

    There are many benefits to being a member of the student union, but the most visible one is the student card. Tamko offers its members a student card, which is key to thousands of student discounts across Finland!
