Contemporary academic work allows little time for deep reading or sustained critical engagement, as it is increasingly shaped by pressures of productivity. At the same time, there is growing interest in rethinking qualitative research through experimental and creative approaches—such as using theory as method, writing speculatively, following conceptual provocations, and producing alternative forms of scholarly outputs.
This course creates a structured space to engage with these developments and to apply them to participants’ own doctoral projects. It also draws on emerging collaborations between art and research to open new possibilities for inquiry. Together, these approaches respond to key questions: How can research move beyond reproducing existing knowledge? How can we support inquiry that speaks to emerging scholarly and societal concerns?
The course is organised as a series of interactive, practice-based seminars that directly address these questions and to develop forms of criticality and to bring creativity to one’s research.
