International Security, At least 120 cr

The international Security specialisation consists of: 

• Joint Programme Studies (minimum of 20 ECTS) 

• Advanced studies in International Security (20 ECTS) 

• Advanced studies in Security Governance (10 ECTS) 

• Elective studies (30 ECTS), including internship and working life skills (10 ECTS) 

• Master’s Thesis and seminar (40 ECTS)  

Students will develop a thorough understanding of international security as a contested concept and practice. The students will have the knowledge and skills to analyse, develop and reimagine policymaking processes on international security, strategy and crisis management. They can contribute to problem solving on international security challenges and strategic issues. 

Moreover, the students will be familiar with the key methods of international security studies and can identify and analyse security risks and threats in the international security sphere in a critical and analytical manner. The students grasp how complex problems related to the changing nature of organised violence and ecological, environmental, socio-cultural, and economic dimensions of sustainable development are interrelated, including the effects of planetary boundaries to security policies and practices. 

Finally, the students will learn several key working life skills during their studies. These include acquisition of data, analytical and critical thinking, problem definition and reporting, alongside political communication and interaction. They have prerequisites to act in a multicultural environment shaped by the need for sustainable development. The students will develop firm skills needed in engaging in constructive expert and social debate on strategic issues and international security more broadly. They can evaluate critically the status of different information sources in these fields. Students can communicate and debate research-based knowledge in academic and practical contexts.
