Discipline- and Field-Specific Studies, Humans and Technologies, At least 25 cr

Tampere University
Description

Discipline- and field-specific studies, min. 25 credits

- competencies relating to a specific field of research

- competencies relating to a specific discipline

Principles:

a) the studies must be either 3rd cycle studies or otherwise suitable to be counted towards a doctoral degree,

b) the studies must meet the criteria defined by the doctoral programme in terms of content and the subject knowledge to be acquired, and

c) the studies must comprise a meaningful, systematic and well-founded programme of studies for each doctoral student.

Mandatory units: research seminar

Optional units: The units of study that may be counted towards a doctoral degree include intermediate studies in the major subject, other intermediate studies, a thesis and advanced studies in the minor subject, research-related studies which exceed the minimum scope of a master’s degree, courses completed in doctoral schools in or outside of Finland, research papers and other publications, conference presentations, and other scientific activities.

Doctoral students must consult with their supervisor to agree on the content and completion of different units of study.

Objectives

Research seminar  (max. 10 credit)

Upon completion of a research seminar, you will have the knowledge and skills to produce effective research papers that meet international standards for authors of scholarly research and deliver oral presentations, including the introductory lecture (lectio praecursoria) that provides an overview of your doctoral dissertation. You will gain an in-depth understanding of scientific inquiry, research methods and analytical approaches and have the ability to place your research in a broader, multidisciplinary context. You will be well prepared to pursue a demanding specialist career as you will have the ability to listen, accept criticism, engage in dialogue, provide feedback and present constructive arguments in a multidisciplinary environment.

Doctoral study will expand the breadth and depth of your scholarly and theoretical knowledge clearly beyond the scope of a master’s degree. Graduation with a doctoral degree shows that you have reliably demonstrated your depth of knowledge by completing courses and/or other scientific assignments.
