Learning outcomes

After completing the Master's Degree Program in Comparative Social Policy and Welfare, the student will master the broad, specialized concepts, methods and knowledge that form the basis of independent thinking and research. S/he understands the European dimension of social policy and welfare and is able to engage in an open and critical examination in these fields. S/he is able to influence societal issues and carry out creative research and development activities. He / she has the capacity to meet professional demands in the fields of social policy, welfare, social and welfare statistics, social security systems, labor policy, poverty, gender etc. and act as social expert locally and globally. S/he masters the complexities of people and things and is able to look at social phenomena from the perspective of new solutions. S/he has communication and interaction skills to discuss relevant current literature, approach new scholarship, and critically present in public. S/he can independently develop his / her own expertise. Student is prepared to start doctoral studies in social sciences.

Content description

Master's Degree Programme in Comparative Social Policy and Welfare is jointly organised by two European universities: Tampere University (Finland) and Johannes Kepler University (Linz, Austria).

The Master's Degree Programme in Comparative Social Policy and Welfare (COSOPO) provides an interdisciplinary approach to contemporary societies in Europe and facilitates understanding social policy and welfare issues in global, national and local contexts. In this programme, students are able to develop skills for understanding and analysing the development of societies and for engaging with sustainable welfare and policy solutions.

The programme prepares students for postgraduate studies, independent research work as well as for professional expertise on social policy and welfare. At Tampere University the students graduate with the degree of Master of Social Sciences.
