Learning outcomes
In the Doctoral Programme in Media, Communication and Performing Arts, students can complete either a scientific (social sciences and arts) or an artistic doctoral degree.
The objective of the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences (D.Soc.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the Doctoral Programme in Media, Communication and Performing Arts is to gain a deep and diverse understanding of the research approaches of journalism, media, games, communication, visual culture, sound and performance anchored in international research, the perspectives they open to society and technological development, and the relationships of these areas with changing media and communication practices.
The learning outcome of the Doctor of Arts (Theatre and Drama) degree is to enable students to conduct independent artistic or art pedagogy research based on the students’ understanding, skills and experiences in the field of performing arts. The research expertly uses the methods of artistic or pedagogical research, develops them or creates new methods. The research produces knowledge on the making of art and teaching methods. It can also examine different phenomena from the point of view of the performing arts and the methods they offer. The research creatively applies theories and methods from other disciplines and engages in a critical discussion with them. The aim is to produce new kinds of performing arts experts and practices in interaction with society and in relation to changing societal challenges. The research increases the impact and significance of artistic research as an academic discipline and societal problem solver.
During the doctoral studies, students focus on their own field of research and its societal significance, learn to independently and critically apply scientific and/or artistic research methods, and use their competence in research groups and networks. Students will gain proficiency in journalism, media, games, communication, visual culture, sound or performing arts research, enabling them to work as researchers and experts in their field. Students will be capable of independent and innovative thinking in their own field of research and be able to convey research-based knowledge and work in the international scientific community. Students will also become familiar with information retrieval methods and research ethics, the latest research in their field, the national and international development of their research area, and teaching and guidance practices.
