Content:

This module offers an opportunity to develop professional expertise in the labour market during studies and to include an internship period to the degree.

There are different options for completion, from which students can choose the one that supports their career objectives.

Students can work as a trainee, as a volunteer at an organization or company (internship) or participate in a project relevant to the programme (e.g. HUBS).

Internship must be approved by the programme. Contact the responsible teacher or your education specialist to discuss the suitability of your internship.

Internship:

The internship period can be carried out either in Finland or abroad (e.g. Erasmus+ internship). Students will find an internship placement independently. At the end of the internship students are required to write and submit a report analyzing the internship period and deliver a certificate of employment.

The internship place, duration and the report must be agreed with the academic director or education specialist of the programme. General criterion is that the internship must last for more than 2 months (= at least 9 weeks) as a full-time job.

Internships supported by Tampere University (internship voucher)

Students have a possibility to apply for an internship voucher. University-supported internships must be suitable for the student’s field of study and goals. First please make sure that the internship that you have in mind fits to your programme by contacting your programme’s education specialist. Students are responsible for finding and organizing internship positions for themselves.

The internship voucher can be used for an internship that meets the duration and scope requirements set by your degree programme. Internship voucher can be used in internships where the employer is Finnish. The internship voucher is not paid to the student; instead, the employer pays the student a salary and bills the University for the voucher after the end of the internship period. The internship voucher cannot be used in unpaid internships. General criterion is that the internship must last for more than 2 months (= at least 9 weeks) as a full-time job.

The internship voucher can also be obtained for part-time employment. However, the total duration of the part-time internship must meet the requirements set by the degree programme. For example, a 3-month internship can be done in 6 months if the internship is done in a part-time employment relationship (50% working time).

More information, please see

Report after the internship:

You are required to write 2-4 page report of your internship, analysing your experiences and observations about the work and the internship place, and using concepts learned during your studies. The report should be a reflection of your learning process. The point of view, question or area which you contemplate in your report can, for example, be related to the way the work is organised in the internship place; the content of your own tasks during the internship:

  • description of your workplace and tasks
  • what kind of professional skills the tasks demanded
  • what kind of expectations did the internship place have of you
  • what did the interaction with clients include
  • how did the internship place and your tasks relate to your completed studies
  • how did the networks function (unofficial, official, local, international, within the work place, with the clients)
  • what kind of professional skills were needed in your work

Write an internship report and send it to the responsible teacher of the programme and your education specialist.
