Degree programmes' communication and language studies
The Language Centre organizes all communication and language studies included in the degree studies of all faculties. All degree programmes contain obligatory communication and language studies. In addition, the students may study languages according to their own interest as free-choice elective studies.
You can check the communication and language studies included in your degree in the Student's Guide Curriculum and teaching schedule section. First, select Degree programmes from the top headings and then use the filters on the left side of the page. Select Degree programme type and Field of study as the filter, and you will be able to choose your own degree programme from the search results. All study courses included in your degree are listed under Structure and studies.
In the following languages the courses are taught in English: Chinese, Finnish as a second language and Intercultural Communication (read about ICC and S2 courses under the corresponding headlines). In other languages the language of instruction is generally Finnish, and therefore sufficient Finnish skills are required. However, most of the more advanced classes, e.g. Spanish and German, are taught in the target language, thus students with sufficient knowledge of the language may participate in those courses.
Assessing your language proficiency level
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language learning, teaching, and assessing. It was developed by the Council of Europe, and it is widely used e.g., in institutions of higher education to describe the learning outcomes of language courses. This allows both national and international comparison. You can familiarize yourself with the language levels as described by the Council of Europe.
Language certificates
The certificates are issued to students who are registered as attending at Tampere University, are applying for international student exchange or internship and are required by their prospective host university to provide a separate certificate demonstrating their English language skills.
Your language skills will not be separately assessed, as the certificate will be based on the language courses that you have completed at our University. Certificates may be provided to verify that you have successfully completed foreign language courses that are or have been included in the Language Centre’s curriculum. You will receive the requested certificate by email.
Upon your request, the Study Office of Tampere University will issue you with a certificate of your English language skills. Please send your request to the email address opintotoimisto.tau [at] tuni.fi.
If you need a certificate of other foreign language courses than English you have completed at the Language Centre, send your request to kielikeskus.tau [at] tuni.fi.
