Tampere University Student’s Guide

International student tutoring

Each academic year, more than 1,000 new international degree and exchange students begin their studies at Tampere University. Some come to Tampere to complete an entire degree, while others study as exchange students for one semester or academic year. Getting to know a new environment, study practices and Finnish culture can initially feel challenging. An international student tutor helps a new student get started with their studies and find their place in the university community. Tutors are Finnish or international degree students who receive training for the role.

At Tampere University, tutoring for international degree students and tutoring for exchange students are organised as separate activities. They have their own tasks, practices, training, schedules and application rounds. Tutors for international degree students support students starting a full degree in Tampere. This type of tutoring focuses on helping students become familiar with their degree programme, study practices and the university community, as well as supporting their longer-term integration into the university and Finnish society. Exchange student tutors support students who come to Tampere for a fixed period. This type of tutoring focuses on the students’ arrival, the beginning of the semester, practical guidance, group formation and helping students quickly become part of the university community.

Internationalise at home as a tutor

International student tutoring is a practical way to gain international experience at home. Developing international competence does not always require going abroad. As a tutor, you can gain international experience on your own campus, use different languages, learn about different cultures and develop your ability to work in a multicultural environment. At the same time, you contribute to the objectives of Tampere University’s internationalisation strategy. As a tutor, you help build an open and inclusive study culture in which new students can feel welcome and be equal members of the community.
