<p>Features of a good essay in philosophy</p>

<p>Some intermediate and advanced study units in philosophy can be completed by writing so-called essays, and it is recommended that in advanced studies, some of the study units are completed with an essay. Students must always first agree with the teacher responsible for the study unit (or lecture course) about the essay completion and its topic, scope, and the literature used. In what follows, some general evaluation criteria are presented; the teacher will relate them to the topic and the level of the study unit.</p>

<p>In this context, an “essay” does not just mean any text belonging to the genre of essays as branch of literature; rather, it is primarily a short treatise, similar in structure and style to a written academic seminar paper. The content of the essay forms a clearly structured and delimited whole where the structure reflects the student's comprehensive understanding of the topic. The structuring is aided by the division of the text into sections with subheadings.</p>

<p>The introduction briefly presents or delimits the topic and states the aims of the essay. The substantive sections are divided according to topic. The student’s own comments can be included as part of the substantive sections or they can be presented at the end of the essay, where one can also briefly mention other issues related to the essay and topics for further analysis. An essay must consist of full sentences and be a smooth readable text: mere bullet points or lists are not acceptable. Nor is an essay a direct translation or a mere summary of the texts discussed. It is important to keep to the issue: a writer who has understood what is essential does not chatter and ramble in a desultory manner. The length of the essay or the amount of work put to writing it are not the only criteria for acceptance.</p>

<p>An essay should show that the student is well acquainted with the agreed source material. This is a minimum requirement for an essay. In addition, the student should demonstrate a philosophical understanding of the topic of the essay. This understanding is reflected, for example, in the student’s ability to structure and apply the learned material and to relate it to broader philosophical knowledge. A student who masters the topic at issue is able to discuss the relevant doctrines and theories critically and argumentatively and to recognise their strengths and weaknesses. There is no need to agree with the author or the lecturer. The student may also present one’s own views on the matter, but they must be justified. However, an essay is not acceptable if it only expresses the student’s own opinions.</p>

<p>In the evaluation of an essay, both student’s mastering of the relevant philosophical material and general philosophical ability to address the topic are considered. The significance of the latter criterion increases as the studies advance. When comparing the level of requirements for basic, intermediate and advanced studies, it is worth remembering the cumulative build-up of requirements as the studies advance: the student must show a better and more extensive mastery of the topic later than at an earlier level of studies. An essay that would be graded ‘excellent’ in basic studies may only receive ‘satisfactory’ in advanced studies and even result in a rejection in postgraduate studies. In basic studies, it is required that the student has understood the central ideas and concepts of the relevant doctrines. In addition to these, intermediate studies require the mastery of the rationale and mutual interconnections of the views discussed. In advanced studies, the essay should form a structured whole where the student demonstrates an ability to critically analyse relevant philosophical perspectives in a broader philosophical context.</p>

<p>A six-point scale (0–5) is used to evaluate essay performance. A rating of 5 means excellent, 4 commendable, 3 good, 2 satisfactory, 1 inadequate, and 0 rejected. In some cases, a simple pass-fail rating is used.</p>
